MILAN - Exports of Italian cheeses take off in 2021, while domestic purchases - due to progressive reopening - are returning to pre-covid levels.

This is the 'light and shadow' balance that emerges from the annual assembly of Assolatte, the association to which 250 companies belong, representing 90% of the turnover of the Italian dairy sector.

Foreign sales of Italian cheeses show a + 12% increase in the first half of 2021, with positive results for all product categories. Thanks to the elimination of the additional Trumpian duties and to the fewer anti-covid restrictions, Italian cheeses have resumed their run. In particular, excellent performances were recorded by France (+ 13.8%), Belgium (+ 20.8%) and the Netherlands (+ 15.6%). Outside of trade with the European Union, the recovery in the United States is consolidating: exports to American soil recorded an encouraging + 27.3%.

Milk production also continues its march.

The growth rate of deliveries (+ 3.2%) is far higher than the European average and is the highest among large milk producers.

Dairy production increases (+ 6.0%), with mozzarella and some PDOs that continue to be the driving force.

While domestic purchases - due to progressive reopening - are returning to pre-covid levels (-9% in the second quarter of the current year).

Patuanelli, accompany the recovery of the sector

The dairy sector "has amply demonstrated its abilities and the tenacity of operators in maintaining the level of production unchanged, ensuring the country's food supply, even during the pandemic. Now we must accompany the recovery phase, in order to overcome the critical issues that still characterize the sector ". This was stated by the Minister of Agriculture Stefano Patuanelli, on the occasion of the annual Assembly of Assolatte.

For Patuanelli, "it is necessary to have an overall vision and great design skills, but it is equally urgent to create a system between all the components of the supply chain". In his message, the minister also guaranteed the commitment of his department and the government in European and international offices to counter "any action that could damage the reputation of Italian agri-food excellence" and shared the need for a simplification of the bureaucratic system. . "It is necessary to find the right compromise between the need to have certain rules and entrepreneurial freedom - he added -, so that the State is never perceived as an obstacle".
