The European Week of Sustainable Mobility begins on Thursday 16 September and will run until Wednesday 22. The Week is a campaign by the European Commission to raise awareness among the citizens of the states on sustainable urban mobility: active mobility (feet and bikes), public transport, micro-mobility electric.

This year's theme is "Safe and healthy with sustainable mobility", and recalls the difficulties faced by Europe and the world as a result of the pandemic.

Covid-19 and lockdown have strongly pushed active and low- or zero-emission mobility, and this trend requires further promotion.

European Week is held annually from 16 to 22 September, and culminates with Car-Free Day on 22. Local authorities are invited to experiment with new measures, promote new infrastructures and technologies, measure the quality of air and raise public awareness.

According to the Italian Federation of the Environment and Bicycle (Fiab), in the last year there has been an average increase of 30% in cycling in the cities, 2 million 2-wheelers have been purchased, and there has been a boom in electric (which avoid sweat and fatigue) and folding (which can be carried by bus and train like a suitcase). The Ministry of Infrastructures has announced that at the end of the year the National Cyclist Mobility Plan will be issued, provided for by Law 2 of 2018 on cycling and so far never prepared.

In Italy, on the occasion of the Week, the traditional Giretto d'Italia is held, the Legambiente initiative that rewards the municipalities where clean mobility is used the most. In the 29 participating municipalities, to participate, simply go to school or work by bicycle, scooter, electric scooter, monowheel, e-bike, hoverboard or segway, passing through one of the set checkpoints. Smart working employees will be able to participate via a "virtual check-point" by answering an online survey. The winner will be the Municipality that, between 6.00 and 10.00 in the morning, will have totaled the highest number of green trips.
