Appeal for election by Herbert Grönemeyer: "I'm 65 now, and it is my generation that has a duty"

Nine days before the federal election, a prominent voice takes a stand: Herbert Grönemeyer calls for the election to be more elementary than the previous one. He does not reveal who he recommends - but his criticism is clear.

It will be serious before the general election on September 26th - and one of Germany's most famous singers and songwriters wants to radiate this seriousness. In a five-minute video that Herbert Grönemeyer published on his social media channels on Friday evening, he urgently calls for participation in the vote. He is worried "that it will slip through us, how much more elementary this choice is compared to the previous ones," he says.

Grönemeyer, who is apparently sitting in a music room, guitars, amplifiers and computer screens can be seen in the background, sees the climate changes as so urgent that a change of direction is necessary. He finds a picture of the indolence of the electorate: "We are - including myself - a tough herd of cows." With another image he would like to call for people to overcome this inertia: The country is a family business, the population is the employer and politics is the company management. And in 16 years of coalition it has worn itself out, is "encrusted, sluggish, discouraged and, in individual parts, more and more focused on its own benefit."

The singer emphasizes that the video is not an election advertisement - he does not recommend a single party.

But at least those who cannot solve the country's problems from his point of view, he shows with his coalition scolding.

In addition, Grönemeyer warns that the excuse "I waited for now, unfortunately made a mistake" can no longer be accepted in four years' time.

Grönemeyer has repeatedly expressed himself on political issues, the fight against racism and poverty is important to him.

In interviews, Herbert Grönemeyer said that at the beginning of his musician career, in the early 1980s, he offered to take part in an election tour for the Greens - but at that time he was too unknown to the party.

That soon changed, in 1984 with the successful album "4630 Bochum".

The song “Kinder an die Macht” was heard on its successor, “Sprünge”.

And even today he says: »Young people do a huge job«.

With Fridays For Future you would have woken the world from deep sleep.

But in the federal election, the over-50s are in the majority.

That's why Grönemeyer says: "I'm 65 now, and it is my generation that has an obligation".

When choosing, one should ensure “a change of rhythm”, says the musician, “otherwise we will be drowsy” (which, of course, he pronounces “dööösich” in the Westphalian way).

Grönemeyer calls for "the climate election check, or at least the voting machine to be done" and in any case to cast the ballot.

Concise final word: "Good choice!"
