A weapon found in a hotel in Düsseldorf triggered a large-scale police operation that lasted for hours on Friday.
The gun was discovered in one of the rooms, said a police spokesman in the evening.
A man to whom the weapon is attributed has been arrested.
Several special task forces (SEK) combed the hotel.
All guests and employees were brought to safety.
The police found "at least one" suspicious suitcase that is being examined by explosives experts, the spokesman said.
The mission was not yet completed by late evening.
The police in Düsseldorf reported on Twitter:
The spokesman did not want to provide any information about the possible backgrounds of the incident.
"The arrested person has not yet appeared to the police," he said simply.
There were no indications of further suspects.
The mission began in the early afternoon.
Heavily armed police surrounded the hotel "the niu Tab" in the Oberbilk district of Düsseldorf.
Units with special vehicles - including an armored car - moved in, and several ambulances came to the scene.
The surrounding streets were cordoned off extensively.
