Road safety: the number of deaths in August fell by 8% compared to 2019

The number of people killed on the roads of metropolitan France in August fell by 8% compared to the same month in 2019 with 267 deaths, announces Road Safety on Friday.

However, this figure is up compared to August 2020 (+ 10%), a year in which the data was affected by the Covid-19 crisis, which led to a change in travel habits.

Like road fatalities, traffic is also on the rise compared to last year, according to Road Safety, which quotes Cerema (Center for Studies and Expertise on Risks, the Environment, Mobility and planning): it increased by 15% in August compared to 2020, and in particular by 30% on weekends.

A "resumption of the mobility of the French", and accidents ...

Moreover, explains Road Safety, "the results concerning accidents and injuries reflect the resumption of mobility for the French, with an accident of the same order as that of the months of August before the pandemic".

Bodily accidents (4,350) and injuries (5,738) thus increased by 2% compared to August 2019.

Also on the rise compared to the previous two years, the number of cyclists killed (24, i.e. 3 more than in 2020 and 4 more than in 2019), of children and adolescents deceased (23, respectively 7 and 1 of more), as well as the figures in Overseas. A total of 19 people were indeed killed on these overseas routes, against 15 in August 2020 and 11 in August 2019.
