(ANSA) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 18 - The United States government is ready to repatriate to Haiti thousands of migrants who in recent days have gathered under a bridge on the border between the US and Mexico. The American media reported it.
The flights will begin tomorrow and could involve up to eight per day, officials told The Associated Press.
At least 10,000 people, mostly Haitian migrants, are camped under the bridge connecting Del Rio in Texas to CiudadAcuna in Mexico, and more are expected to arrive. The mayor of Del Rio Bruno Lozano has already declared a state of emergency.
Describing the situation as "unprecedented" and "surreal", Lozano said border patrols were overwhelmed and migrants "agitated"they lived in impossible conditions.
The border crossing at Del Rio was temporarily closed yesterday "to respond to the urgent security and protection needs presented" by the influx of migrants, US customs said. The makeshift camp in Del Rio has few basic services, and the migrants, camped in a temperature of 37 degrees, cross the river into Mexico to get supplies. The media reports that two children are already born in the camp. (HANDLE).
