(ANSA) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 20 - The deforested area of the Brazilian Amazon in August 2021 is the largest ever observed in this month for ten years: this is what emerges from the data of the Institute for the Environment and Man (Imazon), which monitor the region via satellite.
According to the NGO, 1,606 square kilometers of forest were cleared last month, equal to five times the size of the State of Belo Horizonte and is 7% higher than that recorded in August 2020.
Also according to Imazon, if we add the data obtained in January and August of this year, 7,715 square kilometers of forest have already been destroyed.
This index was also the worst of the decade and is 48% higher than that recorded in the same period last year.
"If we want to avoid that the year ends with the largest cleared area of the decade, we urgently need to take more effective actions, such as increasing the embargo on already illegally cleared lands and intensifying inspection operations, with the necessary punishments for loggers", Imazon researcher AntonioFonseca told the news portal G1. (HANDLE).
