(ANSA) - MILAN, 20 SEPTEMBER - The S&P rating agency predicts that "energy prices will continue to increase in 2022-2023" in Europe "due to a contraction in supply".

"Europe's most ambitious environmental targets will accelerate the closure of thermal and nuclear generation capacity, which cannot be fully offset by renewables for the next three years, leading to greater volatility in climate-related prices in the medium term," the report reads.

In Italy, in particular, energy prices are expected to be "higher than in other European markets until 2025, due to a structural lack of supply" which should lead to "an increase in interconnection capacity to 12.7gigawatts in 2025" . The integrated utilities will benefit from this situation, emphasizes S&P, "in particular Enel, A2A and Edison". "The increase in interconnection capacity will probably reduce energy prices in Italy" which will become "more sensitive to the lower prices of other countries, especially France".

In 2021, S&P expects a "strong rebound" in electricity prices, from an all-time low of 38 euros per megawatt hour in 2020 to 50 euros per megawatt hour, "supported by the increase in gas and coal prices, with the forecast that prices will rise more than the 60 euros per megawatt hour in 2022-25 ". (HANDLE).
