The Pfizer vaccine against the coronavirus is

"safe" and "tolerated"

by boys from 5 to 11 years old, to whom the adapted dose generates a "robust" immune response, according to the results of a study announced Monday by the laboratory.

The vaccines administered to this group contain a lower dose, but generate a reaction "comparable" to that observed in

patients between 16 and 25 years of age

.

In their statement, the firms Pfizer and BioNTech assure that they will send this data to the authorities "as soon as possible."

The phase 2/3 study included

2,268 participants

who were 5 to 11 years old and received a dose level of 10 µg in a two-dose regimen administered 21 days apart.

Last March, Pfizer had already announced that the vaccine was 100% effective in boys between 12 and 15 years old.

The report showed "strong immunogenicity in a subgroup of adolescents one month after the second dose," according to the statement from both pharmaceutical companies, which indicated that the observed side effects were similar to those detected with the trial in the group between 16 and 25 years.

These results were key so that boys of that age could be vaccinated before the start of the new school year, in August.

Even Pfizer said its vaccine is more effective in adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15 than in young adults between the ages of 16 and 25.

This was stated by the representative of the pharmaceutical company, John Perez, during the meeting held by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine, based on pioneering mRNA technology, was the first to be approved in the West.

Recently, they reported that they will seek to produce 2 billion doses in the remainder of 2021, thanks to a new production center that they opened in Germany.
