Amerigo Vespucci returned today to Castellammare di Stabia (Naples), his birthplace, to celebrate its 90th birthday.
The great sailing ship of the Navy, commanded by the vessel captain Massimiliano Siragusa, was in fact launched in the Stabia shipyards on February 22, 1931 and has remained the great historical pride of the Navy ever since.
"The Amerigo Vespucci sailing ship is back home! A great emotion for me and for the whole city of Castellammare di Stabia", said the mayor of Castellammare Gaetano Cimmino, welcoming the ship.
"I met - he continued - the commander of the Vespucci, the vessel captain Massimiliano Siragusa, to whom I delivered a plaque to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the launch in our glorious shipyard.
The ship will stop in Castellammare for the whole day today. "The covid rules do not allow visits on board, but the Stabiesi will be able to approach the ship to celebrate it from the dock and take photographs. The Vespucci will remain in Castellammare all day.
