The serial adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra Y's work, The Last Man, originally published by Vertigo Comics, is a long-standing project. Thanks to Disney +, it was finally able to come to fruition, in the form of a 10-episode program produced by FX Productions. The story of "Y, The Last Man" is that of a world where a mysterious and dazzling pandemic instantly kills all mammals carrying a Y chromosome. All except Yorick, a cisgender man, and Esperluette, his tame male monkey. With a cage under his arm and a gas mask on his face, Yorick seeks to flee a world that has become hostile to him. Fortunately, he crosses paths with a few allies: 355, an agent of the Culper Ring spy ring, as well as geneticist Alison Mann. Together they will try to find theorigin of the pandemic, and try to survive in this post-apocalyptic universe.
To portray this highly feminine world, producer and showrunner Eliza Clark has surrounded herself with Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda, Louise Friedberg, Brian K. Vaughan and Melina Matsoukas, as well as Nellie Reed in production. The series stars Diane Lane, Ashley Romans, Ben Schnetzer, Olivia Thirlby, Amber Tamblyn, Marin Ireland, Diana Bang, Elliot Fletcher and Juliana Canfield, in roles that readers of the original work will likely recognize.
Rewarded by three Eisner Awards, the Y comic, The Last Man was also nominated for the first Hugo Award for Best Graphic Novel for its volume 10. A colossal work which finally benefits from an audiovisual adaptation, which will allow as many people as possible to discover it.
Disney + is offering the first three episodes of the series from September 22 in the Star section of the service: the following seven episodes will then be offered at the rate of one per week.
