Find out which gardening work you should do now here.

When the days get shorter and the nights get longer again, the first cool winds blow and the first leaves slowly change color, it becomes clear: Autumn is just around the corner.

For garden owners, this means that the preparations to make plants, furniture and co. Autumn-ready and finally winter-proof can begin.

“In the past year we have seen a significant increase in demand for properties with spacious outdoor areas.

A large, well-tended garden or comfortably furnished balcony is an ideal refuge for many people, especially in times of restricted contact and lockdown.

Proper maintenance of the exterior surfaces involves both work and a lot of care.

For garden owners, the final spurt for winter and spring preparations starts in autumn, ”says Beata von Poll, member of the management team at VON POLL IMMOBILIEN.

Autumn pruning: cut back trees, bushes and perennials

If you want to look at a blooming splendor of plants in your garden in the coming year, you should start preparing for spring now.

Late autumn is ideal

for

pruning

shrubs, fruit trees and bushes

.

Sick, damaged and dead branches should be removed

before the night frosts begin

- this promotes the growth of the plants and gives them additional strength for new shoots.

Hedges are a popular alternative to garden fences to create an opaque demarcation on your own property.

Enjoy the garden and balcony in autumn too

The lukewarm summer nights are slowly coming to an end. Gone are the cozy get-togethers on the balcony or in the garden - or is it? With a few helpful movements, garden owners can

still benefit from their outdoor areas in autumn

. Summertime is considered by many to be the typical barbecue season. But grilled specialties can also be enjoyed outdoors in autumn and winter. If the grill is to be left outside during the cold season, owners must provide a suitable cover. A fire bowl, a radiant heater or a patio heater are best suited as an additional source of heat when sitting together in the autumnal outdoors.

“Gardens, terraces and balconies are more popular than ever. And no matter whether spring, summer or autumn - a cozy outdoor area ensures a certain feel-good atmosphere. Especially when autumn still attracts with a few warm days, a lot of people are drawn to the outdoors, ”says real estate expert Beata von Poll. And she goes on: "When a cozy,

sheltered seating area has been set

up in the autumn garden, on the terrace or balcony

, outside areas become a second living room - ideal for making use of every hour of sunshine before winter."

If you want to fully enjoy the fresh air on your outdoor areas in autumn, you should rely on smaller and compact garden furniture.

On the other hand, larger, upholstered garden furniture - when not in use - can be stored in a dry place to protect against the cold and wet weather.

With the right care, wooden furniture can also hibernate outside.

A few additional light sources, such as solar lights, lanterns or fairy lights, provide the right ambience on cool and dark days.

Protect plants and make them winterproof

It's not just people who need a warm retreat in the colder months of the year. Some plants also prefer a less mixed climate:

Not all plants can overwinter outside

- container plants should be brought inside or into their winter quarters in autumn. Alternatively, these can be wrapped in bubble wrap or special plant protection bags to protect them from frost. While the lawn should be regularly freed from falling leaves, it is ideal for beds as a natural protection against the cold. However, the leaves of walnut or oak trees are excluded, as their leaves do not rot well.

Spring preparations: when is it time to put the early bloomers?

Even before the first frost, it is time to plant the bulbs of the early bloomers - these include tulips, daffodils, snowdrops, hyacinths as well as mugs and allium.

These need a long hibernation and enough time to root, so they should be planted in the ground in autumn or early winter.

Garden centers offer a diverse selection of early flowering bulbs at this time of year.

So it is worth thinking about the new gardening season as early as autumn.
