(ANSA) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 23 - The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Luigi Di Maio co-chaired in New York, with the Foreign Ministers of the Federal Republic of Germany, Heiko Maas, and of the French Republic, Jean-Yves Le Drian , a Ministerial meeting on Libya, amargine of the 76th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. This was announced by the Farnesina in a press release.

The meeting was attended by United Nations Undersecretary General Rosemary DiCarlo, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the member states and regional organizations participating in the Berlin Process, as well as the countries bordering Libya.

The participants unanimously highlighted the need for the international community to continue to support the Libyan political process, and in particular to encourage the preparation and conduct, according to the roadmap agreed by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, of free, fair and inclusive parliamentary and presidential elections. In this context, it appears essential that all the actors involved, both internally and internationally, collaborate in order to find shared and lasting political and institutional solutions, in particular by overcoming the uncertainties still existing regarding the legal framework for holding the elections.

At the same time, the participants stressed the need for all the provisions of the ceasefire reached on 23 October last - including the exit from the country of all the foreign fighting and mercenary forces - to be implemented without delay in order to achieve consolidated security conditions in the country and in the regional context. .

During the meeting, the shared hope emerged for a rapid adoption of the Security Council resolution extending the mandate of UNSMIL (the United Nations Support Mission in Libya), to allow it to be fully operational in a crucial phase of the Libyan transition.
