Wine, Italy world leader especially in whites

PISA - "Italy maintains its world leadership in wine production which, even in the 2020 harvest, is close to 50 million hectoliters. An interesting trend, which may have repercussions on international markets, is the fact that white wines continue to be prevalent on red wines, reaching 57% of the total production ".

This was revealed by Pietro Tonutti, professor of Viticulture at the Sant'Anna School of Pisa and director of the master "Italian wines and world markets" carried out with the universities of Pisa and Siena, for Foreigners of Siena and the Italian Sommelier Association to train experts in the promotion of Italian viticulture abroad, on the sidelines of the presentation of the 7th edition of the advanced training course.

"Another interesting fact - adds Tonutti - is represented by the consolidation of Doc / Docg productions which represent almost 45% of the total. A little less than the national production is destined for internal consumption and it is therefore essential to pursue export consolidation policies and strategies. which, despite having shown a slight decline in 2020 compared to the previous year, also due to aspects linked to the pandemic, stands at around € 6.3 billion ".

According to Tonutti, "the European and North American markets have maintained or increased (even significantly as in some Scandinavian countries) the levels of imports of Italian wines, while some critical issues have instead manifested themselves in the Asian markets".
