A man died after drinking a large bottle of cola within 10 minutes

A young Chinese man who suffered from the heat that prevailed at his place of residence "lowered" an entire bottle of cola at a record speed of 10 minutes.

A few minutes later he began to feel unwell, was hospitalized and finally died there.

How did this happen and do you also need to be careful?

ten minutes.

This is the time it took a 22-year-old Chinese man to drink a whole bottle of cola.

Those ten minutes led to his death, according to reports.

The doctors who treated him stated that the fact that he consumed the drink at such a high speed led to a fatal accumulation of gas inside his body, which prevented the transfer of oxygen to the body, and eventually killed him.

The man, who was not identified, was rushed to hospital six hours after drinking the fizzy drink, complaining of severe abdominal pain and a bloated stomach.

According to doctors, the young man who arrived at Choiang Hospital in Beijing told them that he drank 1.5 liters of cola quickly.

The rapid drinking of the drink led to the accumulation of gas in his intestines, which due to the pressure then leaked into the portal vein, one of the main blood vessels of the liver.

This caused fatal damage, according to doctors who detailed the case in the journal Hepatology and Gastroenterology.

Tests conducted on the man when he arrived at the hospital showed a number of worrying signs.

The man, who had not suffered from previous health problems, suffered high heart rate, low blood pressure and breathed quickly.

CT scans found that he had necrotic intestinal inflammation (pneumatosis) - an abnormal presence of gas in the intestinal wall.

The scans also revealed that he suffers from liver ischemia - a type of injury caused by a low oxygen supply to the organs, which doctors believe is related to the presence of gas in the portal vein - a large portal vein in the abdomen, which carries blood from the gastrointestinal tract, spleen and other abdominal organs.

Is it the culprit in death or something else at all?

The lead author of the case report, Chiang Hu, said medical staff immediately began trying to release the gases from the man's digestive tract. He was also given medication in order to protect his liver and try to stabilize his other bodily functions from further damage. After 12 hours, blood tests showed that the man had liver damage. His condition deteriorated further, and he died 18 hours after treatment.

However, many experts, including a British expert named Professor Nathan Davis, a biochemist at University College London, questioned the true cause of death, arguing that drinking 1.5 liters of cola, no matter how fast, is to blame for the young man's death. Davis told MailOnline that "the chances of drinking a 1.5-liter soft drink can be fatal are very, very unlikely, that is, incredibly unlikely."

He said more information was needed than was given in the report to draw firm conclusions about the man's death.

He hypothesized that a bacterial infection, a known cause of gas accumulation from within, could be to blame for his death instead of the soft drink.

Professor Davis explained that these bacteria can create gas pockets, causing problems similar to those experienced by the man before his death.

"Usually this condition is caused because you have bacteria that have made their way from the normal digestive tract to where they are not supposed to be, in this case, in the lining of the small intestine," he said.

The gas produced in the intestines can then leak to other areas of the body, such as the portal vein.

Professor Davis said that although the consumption of the drink may have added to the gas problem, such a combination is highly unlikely.

"It is possible, but not necessary, that drinking a large amount of carbonated beverage may have an aggravating effect," he said, "but without any existing medical condition, it is very difficult to see it happening."

Therefore, Professor Davis said there is no reason to think that consuming carbonated beverages quickly can have fatal consequences.

Professor Davis clarified that the possible health consequences of consuming soft drinks are often small and long-term.

"Obviously it's not good for the teeth, it's the main thing, very large amounts of soft drinks can affect bone mineralization," he said, "drinking a few soft drinks a day has no health consequences other than the amount of sugar people consume."
