TV commercials, billboards and photogenic news presenters - everywhere beautiful people pop up with a huge smile that reveals white teeth. Teeth whitening has become very popular in recent years among the general public as well, but if you are considering performing the procedure, you should consult with your dentist, who can explain to you what is the best and most effective way for you to get white teeth.

It is important to note that not every bleach can repair all types of stains. Whitening is usually suitable for people with yellow teeth, but brown teeth may not respond to it effectively enough, and teeth with shades of gray may not whiten at all. Also, bleach will not work on coatings and crowns. In addition, teeth whitening is very unlikely to be effective if the main reason for the discoloration is taking medication or trauma to the tooth, which in this case requires internal whitening.

But before we talk about the whitening process, let's talk for a moment about the causes that lead to yellow or stained teeth.

Well, genetics, the quality of daily oral hygiene, regular use of medication, age, smoking, trauma (accident / injury) and even the type of food or drink we consume - all of these have a huge impact on the color of our teeth.

The process

In general, whitening products contain one of two bleaching agents:

• hydrogen peroxide

• carbamide peroxide

These substances actually break the stains into smaller pieces, making the color less concentrated and the teeth brighter.

The home brace method is very simple to operate: the patient comes to the clinic, the doctor performs the measurements and prepares in the laboratory the brace made of silicone, depending on the exact model of the teeth.

The patient then returns home with the whitening brace and syringes containing the bleach, which he injects into the brace.

The brace is worn on the teeth for several hours (or overnight) and thus the material gradually whitens the teeth.

The process can take anywhere from days to weeks.

And what about side effects?

It is important to know that all whitening products can cause tooth sensitivity for the duration of the treatment.

However, because home whitening products are milder than whitening performed in a clinic, the chance that they will cause sensitivity is smaller compared to the chance when performing whitening in the clinic.

The brace can also be used by the patient for recommended maintenance treatments every few months.

To sum up: teeth whitening using a brace, is a safe and friendly method that allows many patients to enjoy whiter teeth within days to weeks.

It is important to consult with the attending dentist before beginning the procedure, in order to make sure that it is indeed suitable for the relevant type of teeth.
