True, there are quite a few people who promise you a happy life if you do so and so, but scientific research that gives a practical tip for a better life, is already something else.

A new study has found that eating more fruits and vegetables daily - along with regular exercise - can lead to a happier life.

In a first-of-its-kind study, researchers from the British University of Kent and Reading showed that these lifestyle changes make people happier compared to people who already eat a lot of fruits and vegetables or those who eat a standard Western diet.

Dr. Adelina Schwandner of the University of Kent School of Economics, Dr. Sarah Jewell and Professor Uma Kambhampatti of the University of Reading School of Economics examined the effect of various variables on happiness levels.

Their findings have shown that fruit and vegetable consumption and exercise have a positive effect on happiness levels - not the other way around.

Unsurprisingly, the study, published in the Journal of Happiness Studies, found that our ability to reject gratification and exercise self-control plays a huge role in influencing our lifestyle decisions, and hence our overall well-being.

The study also found that there is a gender separation between the two conditions for happiness - men exercise more, while women are more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables.

"In recent years there has been a greater shift in healthier lifestyle choices. Determining that eating more fruits and vegetables and exercising can increase happiness as well as offering health benefits is a significant development. It may also be useful for environmental and sustainability policy campaigns," Prof added. 'Kambhampati.

Because lifestyle-related diseases are the leading cause of poor health worldwide, these findings may have significant implications for public health policy.

In the United States, more than two out of five adults are classified as obese, a condition that puts many at higher risk for heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Exactly how much fruit and vegetables should be eaten?

A study published this year by the American Heart Association (AHA), which analyzed data representing nearly 2 million adults worldwide, found that adults should eat 5 servings of vegetables and fruits.

But, it has a clear division - two of the five dishes should be fruit - the other three should focus on vegetables.

"The American Heart Association recommends filling at least half a plate of fruits and vegetables at each meal," said Dr. Ann Thorndike, chair of the American Heart Association's Nutrition Committee. ", She added.
