The lava flow on La Palma is reactivated and advances towards the coast

The magma river from the volcano threatens one of the main arteries of the island and takes away the church of Todoque

One week after the start of the La Palma volcano eruption, the lava flow has been reactivated this Sunday and has increased its speed in its advance towards the sea.

The president of the Cabildo de La Palma, Mariano Hernández Zapata, explained at a press conference late Sunday afternoon that the southern flank of the colada has joined the main flank in the battered neighborhood of Todoque, (municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane), which has accelerated the movement of the magma river in recent hours.

The Copernico alert system, dependent on the European Union, confirms the union of both languages.

The main symbol of this reactivation has been the collapse of the church's bell tower, which the firefighters of the Gran Canaria consortium had tried to save this week by digging trenches with heavy machinery.

According to the president of the Cabildo, the lava has returned to make its appearance in an aggressive way and has taken away the "hallmarks" of the municipality.

The church has fallen.

The doctor's office and the neighborhood association, too.

The graveyard could now have the same fate.

The lava had stopped for two days, and now it has been restarted by the contributions of the new cones that emerged last Friday. The unexpected eruption of the lava came at a time when some residents of Todoque were collecting some belongings from their homes, forcing them to quickly leave the neighborhood.

The president of the island corporation has stressed that the laundry continues in this way its "rapid advance towards the sea." The magma is ahead, above all, wastelands and pastures, dotted with small population centers. Another of the Cabildo's great concerns, however, is because the magma "reaches the only southern access road, the highway to the coast," which would make it difficult to serve and supply municipalities such as Fuencaliente. The volcano has already caused damage valued at more than 20 million euros, according to data from the Cabildo.

Shortly after noon, the director of the National Geographic Institute (IGN), María José Blanco, had encrypted said speed at 30 meters per hour, although this seems to have accelerated as the afternoon wore on.

The technical director of the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan (Pevolca), Miguel Ángel Morcuende, highlighted a drop in the intensity of seismic activity (seismicity) and its greater depth, about 10 kilometers, which has helped them to return to their homes to the 200 residents of Tacande de Arriba, Tacande de Abajo and Tajuya.

In the last hours there has been a greater arrival of ash to municipalities far from the eruptive center, such as Santa Cruz de La Palma, Villa de Mazo, Breña Alta, Breña Baja and Puntallana, due to the winds that blow from the southwest at altitudes above the 1,400 meters.

The ash rain has led to the suspension of classes in the municipalities of Santa Cruz de La Palma and Breña Alta, in addition to those of Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso and Tazacorte, where schools have been closed since the beginning of the eruption.

The ash is not the only thing that reminds the palm trees of the omnipresence of the volcano.

The change in the wind trend has meant that the explosions can be perceived throughout the eastern part of the island, where the capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, and the island's main tourist center, Los Cancajos, are located.

The explosions can be especially forceful within a radius of five kilometers from the emitting center, which has led Morcuende to demand "extreme precautions, especially not to stand near windows when these explosions are perceived."

Peace of mind message

In his speech, Morcuende wanted to send a message of tranquility.

"We are not in a total alarm sequence, far from it," he assured, "security is absolute."

The total of affected properties is between 500 and 600, according to the estimate made by this newspaper, which includes houses, garages and buildings for industrial and agricultural use.
