The stage version of the music film "Moulin Rouge!" Won the Tony Award for best musical.

The show won the most prestigious Broadway Theater award in New York in a total of ten categories.

One of the award winners was Aaron Tveit as the best male leading actor in the role of the impoverished artist Christian, who fell in love with a dancer in Paris in 1899.

Best leading actress was Adrienne Warren, who embodies the music legend Tina Turner in "Tina".

Because of the corona pandemic, there were only four new musicals to choose from, which premiered in autumn 2019 and spring 2020.

The category best re-performed musical was not even awarded.

In the Tony categories for theater plays, the radical "slave play" about racism in love affairs between blacks and whites had set a new record with twelve nominations, but did not win a single category on Sunday.

The best new piece, however, was »The Inheritance« about the consequences of the AIDS pandemic for a group of gay men in what is now New York.

The best re-performed piece was the racism drama "A Soldiers Play".

The Tonys were originally supposed to be awarded in June 2020, but had been postponed due to the pandemic.

Many stars emphasized the importance of art and drama during the gala broadcast live on the US broadcaster CBS under the motto "Broadway is Back".

Currently, the 40 or so Broadway theaters are gradually resuming their operations and showing musicals and plays.
