(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, OCTOBER 06 - Thanks to the cartoon "Eu andBelarus" published in the Trouw newspaper, the Dutch cartoonist Tom Janssen wins the second edition of the EuropeanCartoon Award, the prize established by the European Press Prize in collaboration with Studio Europa Maastricht.
The winner's work was selected from almost 300 proposals, coming from 28 countries, European and not among the finalists, including the Italian illustrator Marco De Angelis. "Cartoonists are an endangered species: they have to deal with increasing resistance, censorship and even threats and violence. Their space is shrinking, both in the publications available and in the topics they can address," says the director of the European Press Award Thomas van Neerbos.
"In our other main choices we wanted the jury to also reflect on the enormous political history that is unfolding in Belarus and on the political reality of how Europe engages with what is just beyond its borders, and to underline the importance of freedom of media and the violent threats facing the press, "explained the president of the award jury, illustrator Janet Anderson.
