According to an analysis, heating costs in Germany have risen noticeably this year and a downward trend is not discernible.

Apparently, heating costs only go one way at the moment: upwards.

Consumers are facing an expensive winter, as a study by the comparison

portal Verivox

shows.

The

gas costs

have risen by more than a quarter year-on-year, the

prices for heating oil rose

by almost 87 percent, said the comparison

portal

for the analysis.

Analysis: gas costs rose by 28 percent over the year

The

gas costs for a household

* with an annual consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours will be “an average of 1,402 euros per year” in October 2021, according to the

Verivox announcement

.

For comparison: 12 months ago the average gas price was 1,094 euros.

This corresponds to a year-on-year increase of 28.2 percent.

"The decisive factor for this price rally is primarily the galloping wholesale prices," reports the comparison portal.

“On the spot markets, where gas is traded at short notice, the prices for natural gas have increased sevenfold year-on-year.

The price for one megawatt hour is currently just under 98 euros. ”By way of comparison: the long-term average price per megawatt hour is between 10 and 25 euros.

The import prices for natural gas, which are measured by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control, have risen by 146 percent in the past 12 months, the portal says.

While the border crossing price for one terajoule of natural gas in July 2020 was 2,402 euros, the same amount was reportedly already 5,913 euros in July 2021.

“The worrying price jumps in wholesale are due, on the one hand, to the high demand from Asia and, on the other, to the reduced delivery volumes from Russia.

In addition, the CO2 prices in European emissions trading, which are also rising steeply, are driving the price development, ”says Thorsten Storck, energy expert at Verivox, according to the press release.

More and more gas suppliers are raising prices

In particular, gas suppliers who have to stock up on gas at short notice are forced to take action: “For September, October and November 42 regional gas suppliers have announced or have already implemented price increases averaging 12.9 percent,” the press release said.

With an annual consumption of 20,000 kWh, this corresponds to additional costs of around 189 euros per year.

“In the coming weeks we expect a big surge in gas prices,” said Thorsten Storck.

“In addition to the higher wholesale prices, the CO2 price for fossil fuels will also rise from 25 to 30 euros per ton at the turn of the year.

Many gas suppliers pass these costs on directly to their customers. "

Comparison portal reports: heating oil rises by 87 percent

According to the comparison

portal

,

heating oil customers

are

also

facing

an expensive winter due to increased raw material prices.

"While light heating oil cost an average of 42.45 euros per hectolitre in October 2020, it is 79.19 euros at the start of the heating season," the press release said.

That corresponds to a cost increase of 86.5 percent.

For a sample household (20 hectoliters) this would mean additional annual costs of 735 euros.

The painful

jump

in

prices is primarily

due to

global demand for oil

.

With the revival of the economy, this literally exploded and drove oil prices up.

Brent crude oil, which is important for Europe, has grown by around 86 percent year-on-year.

Since the price low in April 2020, the oil price has almost quintupled.

The newly introduced CO2 price puts an additional burden on consumers.

“If you don't have enough heating oil in your tank for the coming winter, you should stock up on it quickly.

By placing bulk orders with neighbors, discounts can often be achieved, ”advises Thorsten Storck, according to the announcement.
