Over one million and two hundred thousand signatures collected to ask for a referendum on legal euthanasia have been deposited in the Supreme Court.
The documents were deposited by Marco Cappato of the Luca Coscioni association and by the coordinators of the committee.
In Piazza Cavour there are also Valeria Imbrogno, partner of Fabiano Antonioni, Dj Fabo, who died in Switzerland with assisted suicide on February 27, 2017 and Mina Welby, widow of Piergiorgio. The committee of promoters explains that of the more than 1.2 million signatures, collected by more than 13,000 volunteers in 6,000 collection tables in over 1,000 municipalities, almost 400,000 have been online. For the first time, the digital signature was also used.
"It represents an innovation at the service of participation and democracy. One third of the signatures collected for the referendum for euthanasia are digital. I don't think there is any fear about it", added Marco Cappato in front of the Palazzaccio.
For Mina Welby "none of the citizens wants to die, even those in serious conditions. But I believe that when the suffering is so great and terrible everyone has the right to say enough is enough. Euthanasia is not always necessary and I want to say this to the Vatican: my husband was not given a funeral even though his death was not euthanized. It was simply the interruption of his artificial ventilation which became unbearable for him ".
