Amsterdam - Smokers will go away empty-handed at Lidl in the future - at least if they live in the Netherlands.
Because the discounter is now stopping the sale of glow sticks and tobacco in its more than 400 branches.
"Lidl is actively helping to make a generation of non-smokers possible," the company explained.
Lidl Nederland is thus supporting an initiative by several health organizations.
Its aim is "to give children the chance to grow up smoke-free and to protect them from the harmful effects of passive smoking and from being tempted to smoke".

The government in The Hague praised the tobacco stop that Lidl announced in 2018 and then gradually implemented in more and more branches.
It is to be hoped that more supermarket chains will soon follow this example, said State Secretary for Health Paul Blokhuis, according to the Dutch news agency ANP.
Lidl is the first retail chain to anticipate a sales ban on supermarkets announced by the government: From 2024, tobacco products in the Netherlands will only be allowed to be offered at petrol stations and in specialty shops, newspaper kiosks and other licensed shops.
From 2023, online sales will also be prohibited.
