The volcano Cumbre Vieja on the Canary Island of La Palma has again caused great damage.

The northern flank of the volcano collapsed on Saturday.

As a result, two new lava flows formed.

Involcan, the volcanological institute of the Canary Islands, reported "enormous destruction".

With temperatures of up to 1,240 degrees Celsius, the new lava flow destroyed the few remaining buildings north of Todoque.

The lava is currently flowing at a speed of 700 meters per hour through a former industrial park, it was said on Sunday afternoon.

The volcano on La Palma erupted three weeks ago.

There are now eight lava flows.

The magma covers an area of almost 500 hectares, about 700 soccer fields.

People have not been harmed so far, but 6,000 of them had to leave their apartments and houses.

Many will never be able to return.

Around 1200 buildings have already been destroyed.

Lava has reached the sea

One of the lava flows had reached the sea days ago.

New land is now forming there under hydrochloric acid vapor.

La Palma has now grown by around 40 hectares.

The volcano is still active.

At the weekend, he threw rocks and an ash cloud for kilometers into the air.

On Sunday the earth shook 21 times, the strongest quake reached a magnitude of 3.8.

You can follow the outbreak live here.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles is traveling to the island at the weekend and has promised ongoing help to the residents.

The army will also help clear away the ashes from Monday.

»La Palma knows that it can count on us.

We will be there with the necessary people and the necessary resources. "

Airports of La Palma and Tenerife could be affected from Monday

Economically, the volcanic eruption is a disaster for the island.

Banana cultivation has been badly hit; around half of the island's inhabitants live from it, directly and indirectly.

In addition, there are fewer tourists than usual. Planes take off and land again at the airport.

But according to the authorities, air traffic could be impaired again on Monday due to the ash cloud.

This also applies to the airport in Tenerife.

The call for help from the animal welfare organization "Leales" caused a stir in the past few days.

The drone pictures showed a cat trapped in a water basin and running back and forth in fear.

The organization asked the authorities to provide food and drink to the cat from the air.

So far, »Leales« has not given any further information about the fate of the cat.
