American comic book publishing house DC Comics has announced that its new Superman, Jon Kent - son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane - will be bisexual.
In his next issue, due out in November, Jon will be pictured in a homosexual relationship with his friend Jay Nakamura.
The announcement was made on National Coming Out Day, an annual LGBT awareness day in the United States.
Since the series opened in July, Superman has already battled fires caused by climate change, stopped a high school shooting, and protested the push-back of refugees.
Meanwhile, she befriended Jay, a journalist with glasses and pink hair.
The two will have a relationship and the first images released show Jon and Jay sharing a kiss.
Series writer Tom Taylor told the BBC that when he was first offered the job, he thought it "would be a missed opportunity if we replaced Clark Kent with another classic straight white savior."
To his surprise, before he could come up with the idea that Jon was bisexual, DC Comics let him know that he was already thinking about it.
"Five years ago it would have been more difficult, but I think things have changed in a really positive way," Taylor said, explaining that he is not worried about social protests.
"There will always be people who will use the usual argument of not putting politics in comics, forgetting that every single story has always been political in some way," he stressed.
