California became the first US state to require large retailers to display toys and baby items in a gender-neutral manner.
The BBC reports, explaining that the new law was signed on Saturday by Governor Gavin Newsom.
The law does not prohibit male and female sections in stores, but large centers must also have a separate and gender-neutral section.

Clothing will not be affected, but the law will cover toys and all "baby items" intended to promote sleep, relaxation, feeding, teething or sucking.
The goal of the legislation is to help consumers identify "unjustified differences in similar products" and address gender bias in children's products.
Non-compliant companies face a $ 250 fine for their first violation and $ 500 for subsequent violations.
The new law, which goes into effect in 2024, will apply to retailers with 500 or more employees in their stores in California.
