The public prosecutor's office in Neubrandenburg is investigating a police officer for attempted murder and serious assault.
The 56-year-old is said to have set a woman on fire, a spokesman for the prosecution said.
According to previous investigations, the man drove to the apartment of the 69-year-old mother of the acquaintances in the east of Neubrandenburg on Monday.
There was a loud and violent argument there, as a result of which the police officer allegedly mistreated both women.
After several blows, he set fire to the 33-year-old and fled.
Neighbors heard the noise, they rescued the eleven-month-old 33-year-old toddler from the burning apartment.
The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire quickly, it said.
The 69-year-old and the toddler were taken to a clinic.
The severely injured 33-year-old woman is being treated in a special clinic in Berlin.
Her life is not in danger.
"Lower Motives"
The women had injuries resulting from blunt violence, it said.
The investigation led to the 56-year-old, who is said to have known both of them.
He was arrested by special forces without resistance.
In the "broadest sense, it is an act of relationship," said the prosecutor's spokesman.
The application for detention was for attempted murder because there had been "base motives" and it was a "cruel manner of killing".
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Interior Minister Torsten Renz (CDU) said he was stunned by the incident.
Now it is important to fully investigate the crime and - if the suspicion is confirmed - to initiate all necessary legal steps.
The Rostock police headquarters had forbidden the man to conduct official business with immediate effect.
