The offside signaling could take place "automatically in 2022", on the occasion of the World Cup organized in Qatar.

It is the futuristic vision suggested by Arsène Wenger, responsible for the world development of football for FIFA.

"There is a good chance that the offside will be automated in 2022," the former Arsenal manager said during a press meeting in Paris, without disclosing the modalities of such technological progress.

"I am bound to secrecy, but it will be the next big step in arbitration," explained the Frenchman, speaking ahead of the Arbitration Days, which will take place from 20 October.

This change has been in the pipeline by Fifa for over a year.

In June 2020 he announced that he was planning "to develop semi-automatic offside signaling technology in order to provide the VAR with additional information that will simplify the referee's decision-making process by optimizing image analysis."

The development of the project should therefore accelerate in view of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar (21 November-18 December).
