Bad mood at the gas station: The cost of gasoline and diesel keeps rising.

Why is that and how can you save?

Frankfurt - Those who are currently dependent on the car have to dig deep into their pockets: The prices for petrol keep rising.

In Frankfurt, according to clever-tanken.de, you currently pay an average of 1.62 euros for a liter of Super E10, the price for a liter of diesel is around 1.53 euros.

But where does the high price come from?

The price of fuel is significantly influenced by the price of crude oil.

It is rising continuously: Since the beginning of the year, the price has risen from 50.5 dollars per barrel to 82.8 dollars (source: tecson / as of October 13, 2021).

But that is still a long way from the all-time high in 2008. At that time, the price was as high as $ 146.2.

And in the years that followed, the cost of a barrel of crude oil regularly exceeded the $ 100 mark.

High costs for gasoline and diesel: Taxes make up a large part of the price

There's another factor that plays a big role in fuel prices: taxes.

According to the law, the energy tax rate for gasoline is currently set at 65.45 cents per liter.

With diesel it is still 47.04 cents.

In addition, there is VAT of 19 percent.

According to ADAC, the state receives around 64 percent of the fuel bill.

So only a third are actual costs for gasoline and diesel. This includes the core product crude oil, processing into fuel, transport and finally the CO2 tax due since the beginning of the year *. This emissions trading for fuels creates additional costs of initially 25 euros per ton of CO2, by 2025 the price is expected to rise to 55 euros. For the end customer, the motorist, this ultimately means an increase in the price of around 7 cents per liter for petrol and 8 cents per liter for diesel.

Of course, oil companies and petrol station operators also take their piece of the pie.

With the latter, however, the corporations determine the prices.

And the decisive factor here is when the oil was bought and how high the oil price was at the time.

Another point for the now high costs is the low fuel price during the Corona crisis.

This also includes the lower VAT rate, which was now 16 percent.

High fuel price: It is best to save on your own consumption

So how can you go easy on your wallet? As a consumer, there is little that can be done about the price of petrol and diesel; switching to an electric car is currently still very expensive. But there are ways and means of reducing your own consumption - and ultimately saving money. The ADAC gives some tips on how to reduce fuel consumption as much as possible. It is clear. Ultimately, those who optimize their own driving style also save on fuel consumption. Timely gear changes and anticipatory driving are therefore advisable.

Savings can also be made on electronic devices in the car.

Devices that are not absolutely necessary should be switched off - because they are also powered by the engine and thus increase consumption.

This includes the air conditioning and heating.

In addition, the weight of the vehicle should be as low as possible.

According to the ADAC, 100 kilos of unnecessary weight result in an additional consumption of 0.3 liters per 100 kilometers.

Roof racks, bike racks or even the crate of water bottles in the trunk are ultimately expensive ballast that you don't have to have with you on every tour.

Tips for saving fuel consumption: Tires can make a big difference

The right tires are also important for lower consumption.

According to the ADAC, energy-saving tires can save up to 0.5 liters per 100 kilometers.

So in view of the current fuel prices, it is often worth investing in new tires.

In addition, the tire pressure should be correct, because if the air pressure is too low, the rolling resistance increases - and with it the fuel consumption.

Just 0.3 bar too little can make a big difference.
