Three regional lyric theaters had chosen Verdi the Flamboyant for this season opening. Hits in Rouen (
Le Trouvère
) and Montpellier (
Rigoletto
), a much less familiar choice in Strasbourg, with the quasi-French premiere of
Stiffelio
. What a godsend to finally be able to see this 1850 work other than DVD, which closes the composer's first period and makes the junction with the popular trilogy that would propel him to the top of the bill (
Rigoletto
,
Le Trouvère
,
La Traviata
).
Its dramatic construction is a bit wobbly, but the characters in this plot where a Protestant pastor is faced with the dilemma of whether or not to forgive the adultery committed by his wife, have a moral force worthy of Schiller, and the music espouses the torments with strength.
The Alsatian public gave him a warm welcome.
