(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 13 - Squid Game overtaking: the Korean series, a true cult phenomenon already beyond the Asian borders, has become the most watched launch ever on Netflix, surpassing Bridgerton's previous record. It has attracted 111 million fans since its debut less than four weeks ago, as confirmed by the streaming service. For the dramadistopico an unprecedented global viral success: the series imagines a macabre world in which marginalized people are pitted against each other in traditional children's games.

While the winner can earn millions in cash, losing players are exterminated.

Spread around the world by word of mouth, particularly via social media, "Squid Game" has climbed the Netflix rankings in more than 80 countries. Also in Italy it is first among the most viewed on the platform. "Squid Game officially reached 111 million fans, making it our biggest launch of the series ever!" tweeted Netflix.

By comparison, the Regency-era romantic drama "Bridgerton" (which is due for a second season) hit 82 million families at its debut, according to Netflix's internal metric that includes any account that has watched an episode for at least two minutes.

Squid Game mania brings South Korean culture back to the top after boy band Bts' K-Pop, the take on Hollywood (and the Golden Palm at Cannes) with Bong Joon-o's Oscar Parasite films, and the long-popular Korean beauty routine.
