No.

This is not another update on Netflix's hit series "The Squid Game", but on a real and rare squid that until recently was considered an urban legend.

A team of American researchers including marine biologists, media people and filmmakers located at a depth of 850 meters below sea level what they thought was a "giant squid" - a squid that could reach a length of 20 meters and was last observed only 5 years ago.

Unfortunately the real thing behind this impressive documentation was a bit disappointing.

The OceanX team, led by biologist Matti Rodrigue, enlisted in 2020 to explore the depths of the Red Sea, where - at a depth of 850 meters below sea level - they located the wrecked ship "Pele" that sank in 2011 on its way to the Egyptian port of Nuweiba.

Next to the ship they spotted a huge and mysterious squid-like creature that looked larger than a human.

"I will never forget what I saw there," Rodrigue said in a video showing the discovery, "while we were looking at the bow of the ship, suddenly this massive creature was visible, looking at the robotic submarine and curling its whole body around the bow."

The team was very enthusiastic about the idea that he managed to witness a giant squid, as throughout history this creature has been considered legendary, and it is really still difficult to document it, and the encounter with it is rare.

It was only in October 2004 that Japanese researchers were able to photograph for the first time a giant squid living in its natural habitat.

Stories about a giant squid have been common among sailors since ancient times, and may have led to the Norwegian legend of the kraken, a sea monster with hunting arms, as big as an island and capable of wrapping and sinking any ship.

However, it is thought that the giant squid is unable to swing its arms out of the water.

It is speculated that evidence for other sea monsters such as the sea snake is a misinterpretation of the giant squid.

Last September, Rodrig turned to Dr. Michael and Kiona to help her identify the squid - and he ruled that it was not a giant squid but a purple-backed squid that usually reaches 60 cm in length. It is indeed one of the largest squid that exist, but it is not the rare giant squid they expected. "In the area where you operate, the Red Sea, there is a significant population of such squid," Dr. Veciona told her, "they are becoming very large. I think what you've seen this version of his huge. "Giant Squid observed for the last time in October 2016, so its size reached 9 meters.

Staff OceanX stayed in the Red Sea on the research vessel OceanXplorer, a crane of 40 tons that can send submarines, systems and sonar and other heavy equipment The equipment includes a remotely operated vehicle and an autonomous submarine that can reach a depth of up to 6,000 meters. The wrecked ship "Fela", 150 meters long, caught fire near the port of Aqaba in November 2011 with 1,229 passengers on board. One of the passengers perished in the fire.
