The provisional toll of gunshots in
Beirut in clashes between Shiite militiamen from Amal and the Lebanese army
is one dead and five wounded
.
Lebanese TV reports citing medical and security sources.
At least two rocket-fired grenades exploded near the Tayyoune roundabout where armed militants of the Amal Shia movement opened fire on the Lebanese army.
This was confirmed by an ANSA journalist on the spot.
Hezbollah and Amal, the two Lebanese armed parties, claim that
unidentified
"
snipers
" were the first to open fire on demonstrators of the same Shiite movements. In a joint statement, Hezbollah and Amal denounce "aggression" by "organized armed groups". According to the two Shiite parties, close to Iran and the Syrian government, "the aggression aims to purposely push the country towards sedition on a religious basis".
The reconstruction of the armed clashes provided by the Hezbollah and Amal media points the finger at the presence of "snipers aiming at the head" of the demonstrators.
The snipers, according to Hezbollah and Amal, "were stationed on the buildings opposite" the Tayyoune roundabout, or rather on the buildings in the Ayn Remmane neighborhood, a well-known stronghold of the Maronite Christian parties, rivals of the two Shiite movements, perched instead in the opposite neighborhood by Shiyah.
