In France, mozzarella surpasses camembert

The French newspaper "Le Figaro" writes - the Consortium for the protection of buffalo mozzarella from Campania dop - according to which, in September, the sales of the mozzarella sector were higher for the first time than those of the king of French cheeses. It is the confirmation of a true liaison between mozzarella and the French. And in this success, a fundamental role is also played by buffalo mozzarella from Campania Dop, which has France as the leading country for buffalo exports (+ 9.7% in 2020 compared to 2019): over 1 mozzarella out of 3 that goes abroad ends up on the French tables. "Just from a recent survey by Nomisma, commissioned by the Consorzio di Tutela - comments the director of the Consortium, Pier Maria Saccani - it emerges that 70% of the French between 18 and 65 years have consumed the Bufala Campana at least once in the last year. Dop, a fact that makes us proud of this product and encourages us to make it known more and more beyond the Alps.



"Never as today - Fabrice Collier, president of Snfc, a union that brings together Normandy Camembert producers, told the French daily - Italian culinary specialties have been appreciated all over the world, in particular, in France. For the first time in France, the camembert sales curve, which is regularly decreasing by 3% per year, has fallen below the sales of mozzarella which, for its part, is experiencing an annual growth of 5% ". From the beginning of the year until last September, 29,230 tons of Camembert were sold in France against 33,170 tons of mozzarella. Finally, "Le Figaro" underlines that "Camembert is eaten in restaurants or during more traditional home-cooked meals, while mozzarella is good in many easy-to-make and more trendy dishes".
