Gender clichés: the grouch and his health manager

2021-10-16T17:34:01.566Z

A society for men's health publishes a brochure that specifically addresses women: Men are precautionary grudges and women are their health managers, it says. This offends both sexes equally.

Why should one accept that men are persuaded that they cannot take care of their health matters independently?

The German Society for Men and Health (yes, there is something like that) apparently does not trust its clientele very much.

In a recent press release, she simply stated: Men are not pensioners.

Aha.

Not some, some, many men, but men.

Herbert Grönemeyer should expand his song.

Because according to this organization the man himself is characterized by a lack of insight into his own condition, a new brochure is aimed specifically at women.

These are "important health managers for their men.

(...) They keep an eye on the man, usually recognize changes early on and know exactly when it is time to see a doctor. "

Further in the text: "The German Society for Men and Health eV would like to use the important role of women in health care for men profitably for the benefit of men." Woe to all the men who (do not want to) live with a woman, because they know not whether they have to see a doctor!

The following is not about the content of the brochure, if you are interested, it is only a short Internet search away.

Of course, you could tick off this message with an old internet wisdom:

Warning, the fifties called and want their gender stereotypes back!

But it could also be worthwhile to explain the concept of »Mental Load« to the doctors, sociologists and psychologists as well as self-help groups that have come together in the German Society for Men and Health can accumulate to a great burden and women are more often affected in relationships.

(This comic explains the problem.)

If it were up to the men's health specialists, women who have a male partner could add another job to their list, a

job advertisement

attached:

We are looking for a

health manager

immediately and forever for the benefit of men

(not m / f / d, only f).

Your tasks and your profile:

  • You are always closely monitoring your partner's health.

  • They are able to make suspicious diagnoses.

  • You have the necessary negotiating and persuading skills in the event of necessary doctor visits.

Your advantages:

  • In addition to calling yourself a girlfriend or wife, you can call yourself a health manager.

    Congratulations!

You do not have to submit your application documents.

We have already planned you.

The activity is not remunerated.

Certainly one can argue that it is natural to take care of one another in a relationship, so why get upset?

If you would like to find out about possible clinical pictures that your partner can meet, from prostate cancer to fibroids: go ahead.

But then it is mutual and not in a construction that imposes responsibility on one and robs the other.

The latter is just as annoying.

The man, the grouch.

How stuck, how disrespectful!

Why should one accept that men are persuaded that they cannot take care of their health matters independently?

Without irony, it is a structural problem when men and boys are given a self-image that outsources health care to a partner.

For many reasons, men in Germany have a lower life expectancy than women.

On average, men are affected by cardiovascular diseases earlier than women.

Men are more likely to commit suicide than women.

There is a lot to be done in terms of men's health.

One step would be not to label them as precautionary grumpy.
