“Indonesia’s Story through Colors and Patterns” an event hosted by Abu Rummaneh this evening as part of an exhibition held by the Indonesian Embassy in Damascus in commemoration of the National Batik Day.

Batik is one of the traditional arts of painting in Indonesia that uses the technique of dyeing cotton or silk fabrics with wax, and was included by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “UNESCO” on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on October 2, 2009.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia in Damascus, Dr. Wajid Fawzi, explained in his speech that the art of “batik” is a treasure of Indonesia that reflects the culture of the region in which it was made and tells the story of the country’s successive civilizations through the decorations, drawing patterns and colors used in it.

The three-day exhibition included in its opening ceremony the graduation of a batch of students who underwent an educational course for the Indonesian language. Which represents the legacy of their ancestors.

Minister of Education, Dr. Darem Al-Tabbaa, indicated that a number of Syrian students taking Indonesian language courses represents a window to enhance communication between the peoples of the two friendly countries, which have a cultural and civilizational heritage, and their blending together could open a wide field for more workshops and cultural exchange.

Director of the Arab Cultural Center in “Abu Rummaneh” Rabab Ahmed pointed out that the relations between Syria and Indonesia are old and ancient and include various economic, social, educational, cultural and political fields.

Among the participants in the Indonesian language course, student Ahmed Sanubar and student Shahrazad Jabara pointed out the importance of learning languages ​​in introducing the cultures of countries and peoples.

For his part, Dr. Eng. Ghazwan Ramadan pointed out that his participation in the course came out of his interest in Indonesian culture and his desire to be familiar with its language and learn it, while the student Rafah Al-Assaad explained that undergoing the language course gained her many knowledge about the culture of Indonesia.

The art of “batik” is a national identity for Indonesia and a driver of its economy. It is distinguished from its counterparts in other countries with its hand-painted tools, decorative patterns and colors that symbolize and represent each region of Indonesia.

The opening of the exhibition was attended by a number of members of the People's Assembly, directors of departments in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, the Ministry of Culture, ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in Syria.
