(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 18 - Italy won two categories out of five in the first edition of the EarthshotPrize yesterday, an initiative wanted by Prince William to reward the best solutions to the climate crisis every year.

Funded by the same eldest son of Charles and Diana together with the Royal Foundation, the prize awards one million pounds (1.17 million euros) to each of the five categories ('Protect and restore nature', 'Clean the air', 'Reanimagli oceans', 'Build a waste-free world' and 'Restore our climate'). The funds will contribute to the development of the selected projects.

Italy took the podium of 'Build a world without waste' with the city of Milan and 'Restore our climate' with the company Enapter, which has its headquarters in Crepina Lorenzana (Pisa).

Co-founded by Vaitea Cowan, Enapter manufactures highly efficient modular hydrogen generators, a "green technology" - the Earthshot Prize website reads - that "could change the way we power our world." The Municipality of Milan was awarded for its neighborhood hubs created to combat food waste and at the same time give support to people in need.

"Milan is the first major city to apply a policy against food waste at the city level that includes public bodies, food banks, charities, NGOs, universities and private companies. And it is working - says the reason for the award -. Today the city has three Food Waste Hub, each of which recovers about 130 tons of food per year or 350 kg per day, equivalent to about 260,000 meals ".

Costa Rica won the award in the 'Protect and restore nature' category, the Indian company Takachar won the 'Clean the air' award and the Coral Vita project (Bahamas) for the regeneration of coral reefs received the award in the ' Revive the oceans'.
