The police in Ilmenau in Thuringia employ around a hundred dead guppies.
The ZIerfische were deposited on a street in the area of a roundabout on a distance of around 50 meters, said the officials.
"Where the fish come from or what they died of is currently unknown," said a spokesman.
It is also still unclear whether they may have been thrown out of a car.
It is now looking for witnesses who have clues about the origin of the animals.
The police are investigating a violation of the Animal Welfare Act.
