(ANSA) - ROME, OCTOBER 19 - With the approval of the new international guidelines, expected in 2012, breast cancer patients can now receive the best treatment anywhere in the world for the type of cancer they suffer from : "a revolution for doctors but especially for women".

The global indications (ESMO Clinical Practice Guideline) encompass all major developments in recent years, and offer a comprehensive picture in advanced breast cancer management. Developed by a group of 28 of the leading experts in the field, the document also speaks Italian: the first signature is in fact by Alessandra Gennari, professor of oncology at the Department of Translational Medicine of the University of Eastern Piedmont in Novara, alongside that of oncologist Nadia Harbeck of the University of Munich The text is designed to complement the latest and potentially practice-changing data by providing graded recommendations for different treatment choices based on the levels of evidence available to support them.

"These are global guidelines that have seen the participation of leading experts from all over the world of breast cancer, who have put the patient at the center and followed the highest methodological levels of evidence - explains Gennari - have taken into consideration by a part which are the best treatments, including the latest innovations such as agnostic drugs, but also considered all the alternative options possible in case some drugs in some countries are not available. Basically a patient anywhere in the world can receive the best treatments for what are the regulatory provisions and the availability of treatment. This is a great innovation compared to the previous guidelines ".

The new guidelines are also global with regard to multidisciplinary treatment, and concern not only medical oncologists, but also radiotherapists, interventional radiologists, and all the figures who must govern a patient.

"All this will allow an effective and immediate management of the new rules for oncologists, immediately available - concludes Gennari - from today in short, the new guidelines apply to the whole world. Each patient will have the best possible treatment for his type of tumor and in the place where he lives. A revolution for doctors but above all for women ".
