From January 1, 2022, there will be a massive change in German supermarkets.

But with some products, customers can already expect an innovation.

Munich - Consumers will have to dig deeper into their pockets when shopping by 2022 at the latest.

Because from January 1, 2022, a tougher deposit regulation will apply.

So far, a deposit has to be paid at the cash register for returnable bottles and cans.

Milk beverages, many fruit and vegetable juices, as well as cider and alcoholic mixed drinks were not affected by this one-way rule.

New rules in the supermarket: deposit on juices and smoothies

That will change from 2022. The Federal Environment Ministry wants to fundamentally change the deposit rules.

Until now, the contents of the package decided whether a deposit was due on a product.

Now the type of packaging material should decide.

However, the first manufacturers are already changing the mandatory deposit.

From October 1st, Coca-Cola's smoothie and juice brand will charge 25 cents for Innocent products for the first time.

The Innocent brand started the petition "Deposit for everyone" as early as 2020, so that fruit juice drinks and smoothies can also be included in the deposit system.

Granini, Innocent and Hohes C: mandatory deposit from autumn 2021

The juice manufacturer Eckes-Granini also welcomes the amendment to the Packaging Act: "The extension of the mandatory deposit to juice and nectar is a long overdue step on the way to closed cycles and more sustainable packaging solutions," says Kay Fischer, Managing Director of Eckes-Granini Deutschland GmbH in a press release.

So FruchtTiger started on July 19th.

The brands Granini and Hohes C will follow from September, according to the company.

The new returnable PET bottles, like cans and returnable bottles, can be returned to any deposit machine at Aldi, Rewe, Edeka and Co.

In addition to the change in the deposit and the associated higher prices, consumers must also expect massive price increases for other products in the supermarket.
