Menstrual cramps are a problem that almost every woman is familiar with, but the plant that can relieve them - and other hormonal effects - is not well known by women.

The shrub Abraham (Agnus castus, or Vitex Agnus Castus) has been known for over 2,500 years as a medicinal plant.

Its fruits and leaves have been used to treat a variety of gynecological problems in folk medicine in Egypt, Greece, Rome and Persia.

Even in the arsenal of modern herbal medicine the plant is in a respectable place.

In Germany and several other countries, the Abrahamic discourse is listed as a drug labeled for the treatment of menstrual disorders, premenstrual syndrome, chest pain and menopausal syndrome.

In Israel, the plant has been sold for many years as a dietary supplement, and recently the plant has also been recognized as a drug for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome.

What is so special about the Abrahamic discourse?

Many of the plants that the herbalist can recommend in case of problems related to the female reproductive system - such as menstrual disorders, menopausal disorders, fertility disorders, etc. - include significant phytoestrogens (female sex hormone-like estrogen-derived molecules).

These plants (like Chinese angelica, black cohosh or red clover) contain chemical compounds that bind to estrogen receptors and can contribute to the strengthening or weakening of estrogenic activity in the body.

They differ from each other by the intensity of the activity, additional effects on the body and the composition of the active ingredients - but for the most part the effect on the estrogenic system occupies a central place in the mechanism of plant activity on the body.

The story is different in the case of the Abrahamic discourse.

For 2,500 years he has been making it easier for women.

As of October 2021, this Abrahamic discourse is mentioned in over 800 scientific studies, of which 29 are clinical studies and 64 review articles or meta-analyzes.

Despite much research on the plant, its exact mechanism of action is unknown.

This plant contains a long list of components that have the potential to affect the body.

The researchers speculate that the plant may support the activity of the ovaries and maintain hormone levels in the body.

Some studies have also found some phytoestrogenic activity of Abraham's bush components, but this effect is not dominant.

In modern herbal medicine the plant is considered a hormonal balance due to its gentle effect on a number of different female hormones.

It is believed that this activity of the plant allows the body to regulate itself more efficiently.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

A review article published in 2018 in the scientific journal Pharmacognosy Reviews presents 12 different clinical studies in which between 14 and 1,634 women participated who received various extracts of the plant for 2-6 cycles.

Most studies have shown improvement in symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome, especially physical symptoms, but also mood swings.

According to a meta-analysis published in 2019 in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine and based on 3 studies, different plant extracts showed 2.57 times higher efficacy compared to placebo in preventing premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms.

Menopausal symptoms (menopause)

In traditional usage it is customary to use the Abrahamic discourse in the case of menopausal symptoms especially in the initial period, when menstruation is still present.

A scientific study published in the Korean Journal of Family Medicine involved 52 menopausal women who were divided into 2 groups.

One group received a Abraham bush and a second group received a placebo.

The researchers concluded that using the plant could alleviate menopausal symptoms.

A natural solution.

Menstrual cramps, menstrual cramps

There are small clinical studies that have demonstrated benefit in using the Abrahamic discourse to relieve menstrual pain and chest pain associated with hormonal changes during menstruation.

Some studies have demonstrated efficacy similar to that of analgesics.

Fertility disorders in women

Shrub Avraham is one of the important plants used by herbalists in situations of infertility in women.

There are several studies that have demonstrated efficacy of herbal extracts that have included Abraham’s discourse in the context of fertility disorders resulting from hormonal imbalances in women and animal models.

At the same time, it is important to note that the difficulty in getting pregnant can be due to many, different and complex reasons (in either or both spouses).

The treatment of this type of disorder is extremely complex and must be performed under close medical supervision only.

Other traditional uses

Some herbalists recommend the use of the plant in cases of decreased libido in women, irregular menstruation, increased breast milk yield, and even a reduction in sexual desire in men.

These uses are only popular and have not been significantly tested in studies.

Does the Abrahamic discourse have side effects?

Shrub Avraham is an interesting and promising plant, which, when used wisely, can contribute and help in various situations.

The plant is generally considered safe to use, and side effects are uncommon and usually mild.

In some cases, nausea, headaches or allergic reactions may occur.

In case of doubt it is advisable to consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Abraham's bush should not be used in conjunction with drugs that have a hormonal effect on the female reproductive system (unless explicitly instructed to do so by a doctor), and the plant is not suitable for use during pregnancy.
