In 2021, less cancer will die of cancer than the EU average in Italy: -13% in men and -10% in women, and survival improves. In fact, 181,330 deaths from cancer are estimated (100,200 men and 81,100 women), 1870 less than in 2020. (ANSA)

In 2021, less cancer will die of cancer than the EU average in Italy: -13% in men and -10% in women, and survival improves. In fact, 181,330 deaths from cancer are estimated (100,200 men and 81,100 women), 1870 less than 2020. The risk of death has however doubled for cancer patients with Covid infection (it is 1.6 times higher than negative cancer patients) and the pandemic also weighs on assistance because neoplasms are observed at an increasingly advanced stage and the number of surgical operations in 2020 is decreasing compared to 2019.

It emerges from the Aiom-Iss Report on cancer numbers in Italy 2021.

The picture is outlined in the volume 'Cancer numbers in Italy 2021', presented today at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and the result of the collaboration between the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (Aiom), Italian Cancer Registers, Siapec-Iap, Aiom Foundation, Passi , Passi d'Argento and Ons. Therefore, an improving figure emerges but at the same time it is emphasized that in the post Covid phase, there are more breast and colon neoplasms operated at an already advanced stage.

The high level of cancer care in Italy is highlighted by the 5-year survival rates, which improve for all cancers, reaching 59% in men and 65% in women (compared to 54% and 63% of the previous updated survey. to 2015). In seven sites in men and eight in women, the survival rates are very high, up to 96.2% of thyroid carcinomas in women and 93.2% in the testicle.

However, the risk of death doubled for cancer patients with SarsCoV2 infection. Due to the delays in diagnosis and surgical interventions due to the pandemic, neoplasms are also observed at an increasingly advanced stage, as emerges from a survey involving 19 pathological anatomies. In 2020, 5758 breast and 2952 colorectal surgeries were performed. The number of transactions is down compared to 2019 (-805).

And the size of the disease at the time of surgery is often greater than that found in the pre-Covid period. The decrease in operated tumors was 32% for the colorectal and 11% for the breast. Survival in our country, says Giordano Beretta, Aiom President, "is in line with the highest levels observed in Europe. In Italy, the number of people alive after diagnosis is increasing, in 2020 there were about 3.6 million, with an increase in 36% compared to 2010. In six tumor sites, however, survivors are still less than 30%, with pancreatic cancer trailing 11% in both sexes. Furthermore, in men the general decrease in mortality reflects the reduction of deaths from cancer due to smoking. But campaigns againstepidemic of tobacco-related neoplasms in women ".
