A wave of colds is currently rolling through Germany again - at the same time the digital AU certificate was introduced.

What changes now when reporting sick.

After the number of flu infections and colds was manageable last year, the wave of colds will roll through Germany all the earlier and more violently * in 2021.

Experts blame last year's corona protective measures, among other things.

Lockdown, masks & Co. have on the one hand caused fewer illnesses - at the same time, however, the immune system was also unable to “train”.

And so it happens that this year, above all, many children, but also adults, are suffering from respiratory diseases.

Accordingly, the number of sick leave is rising again.

New AU 2021: That will change when reporting sick when the yellow slip is no longer available

However, there are some changes this year when reporting sickness to the employer: In October 2021, the digital certificate of incapacity for work (eAU) was introduced.

The “yellow slip”, which is supposed to prove the employee's illness and guarantees continued payment of wages in the event of illness, is now electronically transmitted to the health insurance companies.

But not from all: Because not all medical practices meet the technical requirements for electronic transmission, the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) has granted a transition period for the change until December 31, 2021.

From July 2022, the medical practices will then also automatically forward the copy for the employer.

For employees, the annoying sending of sick notes to the health insurance company and employer is no longer necessary.

Sick notification for health insurance: Employees should check whether they are really being sent

Patients who need a sick leave for their employer should be careful when they visit the doctor until the end of the year: "

As a precaution

,

especially at the beginning

, ask whether your practice has the necessary technology," advises the consumer advice center.

If the doctor's practice does not yet forward the sick note, the employees are still obliged to send the AU certificate to the health insurance company.

If that doesn't happen, things can get really expensive: If the sick leave is not reported to the health insurance company in good time, those with statutory health insurance can later lose their entitlement to sickness benefit.

The sick leave must also be presented to the boss in good time.

By July 1, 2022

, employees themselves have to send the copy for the employer to the HR department

, after which the health insurance companies should take care of this.

By when the sick leave must be available to the employer, see the employment contract.

According to law, an AU certificate is due after the third day of sickness, but many companies require a doctor to be on sick leave from the first or second day of absence.

Going to the office despite the symptoms of a cold - is that allowed?

Not everyone takes sick leave for mild illnesses.

Many employees also go to work with a cough, runny nose, etc. to complete important tasks or to keep appointments.

But cold symptoms can also indicate Covid 19 disease.

Can I still go to work with a cold?
