(ANSA) - MADRID, OCTOBER 20 - Three judges of the Spanish court of Audiencia Nacional have given their clearance for the extradition to the United States of Hugo Armando Carvajal, alias 'El Pollo', former Venezuelan intelligence chief when Hugo Chávez governed and at the beginning of the government of NicolásMaduro. This was reported by the main Iberian media. Carvajal is sought by Washington on charges of drug trafficking and belonging to organized crime.
According to the Efe news agency, the former Venezuelan general will be able to appeal against this decision; however, the extradition proceedings will continue in the meantime.
'El Pollo' Carvajal was first detained in Spain in 2019, but then managed to escape from the authorities and subsequently remain in hiding.
In September of this year he was arrested again by the Spanish police in Madrid.
Carvajal was summoned by another judge of the AudienciaNacional to answer questions on October 27 after providing documents relating to a previously closed and now reopened case on alleged illicit funding of Podemos, a left-wing political group currently ruling in Spain together with the Socialist Party.
