Israel in the face of the Austrian case: this is how we lose tourists

The outline for tourists to enter the country has not yet been approved and the requirements have remained bureaucratic.

In addition, many tests are loaded on vaccinated tourists.

In Austria, for example, a policy of entry of recovering and vaccinated has been established.

The whole world is back to living alongside the corona, except for us, of course.

After more than a year: The first group of tourists landed in Israel (Photo: Reuven Castro)

There is much talk of Israeli "discipline" in the "near" style, as opposed to Austrian obedience and discipline. I returned from a brief visit to Vienna and found a city where the citizens lead a routine lifestyle in the face of the plague, but with respect and obedience to its guidelines. The Austrians themselves are meticulous and so are the many tourists traveling in the city.

About 25 million tourists visited Austria in 2019, of which about 14.5 million in Vienna itself. Inbound tourism accounted for about 10% of the country's gross domestic product, hence its great economic importance.

In April 2021, the Austrian government decided to minimize restrictions on citizens and especially on tourists. Understanding the economic importance of tourism, a policy of entry of recovering and vaccinated into the country has been established without restriction and without the need for testing and isolation. The only requirement is approval for two recognized vaccines. Hundreds of checkpoints have been scattered in Vienna and the municipality is also giving the check for free to tourists.

As early as July-August, about 9.4 million tourist arrivals were recorded.

A minimum decrease of 15% from the previous peak year, an economic investment that yielded an immediate return.

Tourist person-nights in Israel have dropped by 95%!

And what is the situation in Israel?

Confusion, lack of policy, uncertainty about guidelines, and rigid policies that attempt to adopt a "zero risk" approach. In fact, to this day, the entry of tourists from any country is not approved. In practice, there is no tourism to Israel at all! Tourist overnight stays in Israeli hotels in January-August 2021 have dropped by 95%! And the virus continued to come from abroad despite the restrictions, through returning Israelis who in some were not vaccinated and in some violated isolation guidelines and restrictions in public and without fear.

Today we are assured that the situation changes. Really? Which crystallizes, along with proof requirements for vaccines, every tourist is required to undergo testing and isolation until the result from the moment of landing (which in the EU does not exist and a tourist is free for his affairs from the moment he reaches his destination).

In addition, many more tests are loaded on tourists in groups that have passed six months since receiving the second dose, even though in their country they are considered vaccinated.

In theory, vaccinated people from all over the world will be able to come to Israel, in practice, as mentioned, the amount will be sparse because the world has not yet started giving the booster to the population.

In this layout, after the tourist meets the minimum threshold of 3-2 vaccinations, the additional requirements include: a negative test before departure to Israel, a test on landing, isolation for 24 hours to obtain the result, and complex topology.

In addition, it is still unclear whether the unfortunate tourist who made it through all these sections will be allowed to enter sites, hotels, restaurants, transportation without an Israeli green sign.

In Israel, the return of world tourism is very far away

The whole world is coming back to live alongside the corona, and so is the return of world tourism.

This is evidenced by the tens of thousands of Israelis who filled Greece, Cyprus, Austria and others, along with many European, North and South American tourists.

In Israel, the return of global tourism is very far away and probably will not take place, as long as the state's sponsors do not recognize the importance of tourism and the citizens of Israel do not raise the issue of tourism as an engine of economic growth, to the national agenda.
