Damascus University and the General Directorate of Meteorology signed today a memorandum of understanding to link the outputs of the educational process to the needs of the Directorate and its monitoring centers and stations, in addition to supporting and developing joint cooperation between the two sides in the fields of research, training, development, knowledge dissemination and community service.
According to the memorandum signed by the President of Damascus University, Dr. Muhammad Yasar Abdeen, and the Director General of Meteorology, Mahmoud Yassin Abbas, the university will organize joint symposiums and workshops, exchange experiences, activate scientific research in the field of meteorology and atmospheric and space physics, study the possibility of creating postgraduate studies in these fields and work to create a national center Or a postgraduate institute in meteorological research and atmospheric and space physics, qualifying the cadres nominated by the Directorate for postgraduate studies, and securing classrooms, teaching laboratories, and appropriate infrastructure within the buildings of the College of Science.
The memorandum includes the participation of the Directorate of Meteorology in holding training courses for the teaching and technical cadres working on both sides, selecting whomever it deems appropriate from its workers to join the graduate studies program in accordance with university laws and regulations, and nominating whomever it deems appropriate from the University of Damascus to participate in training courses and specialized conferences.
The Directorate also contributes to securing the necessary equipment for a weather monitoring station to be located in the Faculty of Science at Damascus University, providing it with satellite images and specialized programs, and placing it at the disposal of teaching staff and graduate students on both sides.
In a statement to SANA following the signing of the memorandum, Dr. Muhammad Firas Hanawi, Vice President of Damascus University for Scientific Research and Graduate Studies, referred to its role in serving scientific research on both sides by making use of the university's laboratories and supplying it with new graduates with master's and doctoral degrees.
For his part, Eng. Abbas noted the importance of the memorandum in terms of establishing a scientific center for meteorology and climate affairs, graduating MA and PhD holders in this specialization, and cooperating in the field of scientific research related to climate and weather, which constitutes a tributary of all sciences in universities and related public sector bodies.
