Although Saudi Arabia is trying to reduce its dependence on oil, it certainly does not prevent the kingdom from using the oil industry as inspiration for a new tourist attraction.

The giant country has announced an ambitious plan to convert a marine oil drilling rig to an 150,000-square-foot extreme park. The rig is located in the Persian Gulf and funding for the park will come from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The future park will include three hotels and 11 restaurants In addition, the park will house a roller coaster, bungee jumping facilities, skydiving, water sports, water slides, swimming pools, karting tracks, diving experiences and other adrenaline generators.

In early October, simulations of the new park were released, as well as a promotional film depicting the adventures that await park visitors.

"The project is a unique tourist attraction, which is expected to attract tourists from around the world," the Saudi investment fund said in a statement.

It was also reported that the park is expected to be especially popular with visitors from the Persian Gulf region.

Currently, no date has been set for the project to be completed.

Competing in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

CNN reports that the new attraction is considered the first tourist destination in the world to use such oil drilling rigs, and is a strategic part of Saudi Arabia's vision for 2030. This vision is intended to reposition the kingdom as a leading international tourism destination as well as diversify the country's economy.

It was further reported that for visitors from around the world, Saudi Arabia is a destination whose attraction is not high due to the conservative laws restricting the freedom of women in the country, alongside human rights violations. However, Saudi Arabia appears to be determined to change its image and compete with its neighbors Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Oman. Its goal by the end of the current decade is to attract 100 million tourists each year.

One way or another, the announcement of the Extreme Park project comes just months after the announcement by the world's largest amusement park network, Six Flags, of the construction of a huge park outside the capital Riyadh, where, among other things, the world's fastest roller coaster is planned.

This park, named Six Flags Qiddiya, is expected to be inaugurated in 2023.
