(ANSA) - MADRID, OCTOBER 21 - The eruption of the CumbreVieja volcano in La Palma, one of the Canary Islands, led the authorities to issue new evacuation orders yesterday evening.
According to information released by the regional emergency service of the Spanish archipelago, as a preventive measure it affected about 40-50 homes in the municipalities of Los Llanos deAridane and Tazacorte. These are areas considered at risk due to the advance of lava flows ejected from the volcano.
Pending an official update on the number of people evacuated since the eruption began (19 September), it is estimated that there are more than 7,000 displaced persons, the Iberian media write.
Tongues of incandescent magma have so far buried about 866 hectares of land and destroyed 2,185 buildings, including hundreds of houses, according to the latest update of the European Copernicus system.
In the last few hours, the locality of La Laguna has been particularly threatened, with the lava having already arrived on its doorstep.
