Road safety: 15% drop in the number of deaths in September

The number of people killed in a road accident in mainland France in September fell by 15% compared to the same month in 2019 with 263 deaths, Road Safety announced Thursday.

According to the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), this figure is also down, more slightly, compared to September 2020 (266 deaths), the year in which the data was affected by the Covid-19 crisis which has resulted in a change in travel habits.

Road traffic is up in September compared to last year (+ 5%), both weekdays and weekends, according to Road Safety, which quotes Cerema (Center for Studies and Expertise on risks, environment, mobility and planning).

More injured this year

Compared with September 2019, bodily accidents (5,602) and injuries (6,965) increased by 9% and 10% respectively.

Over the same period, mortality is down among motorists (114 killed, 25 people less) and users of motorized two-wheelers (60 motorcyclists killed, or 22 people less).

Cyclist mortality is comparable to that of September 2019 (21 killed, one more person) and significantly lower than that of September 2020 (37 killed, or 16 fewer people).

In Overseas Territories, 26 people were killed in a road accident against 28 in September 2020 and 17 in September 2019.
