Thousands of migratory pelicans stopped by us for a break;

Here you will see them on the weekend

Autumn migration is in full swing, with millions of birds migrating from Europe, through Israel, to warm Africa.

Now the time has come for the pelicans, and thousands of them have landed at an expensive lookout point in the Hefer Valley, to "fill their batteries" with fish before they take off again.

Come see them

In a year when they have not yet decided on an outline for the arrival of tourists to Israel, it is nice to know that there is no shortage of winged tourists who arrived on their way to Africa with the start of the great migration season.

No vaccination certificate, no booster and no green label.

These days you can see thousands of pelicans in the center of the country, who have come for a short vacation in Israel.

They stop to rest, eat and gain strength before continuing their journey to spend the winter in Africa.

The place where you can see the largest number of pelicans in the center is an expensive lookout point in the Mishmar Hasharon reservoir.

Every year, about 50,000 pelicans pass through Israel (Photo: Photos by surfers, Danny Sadeh)

But there are other lookout points in the area, some of them secret, where many pelicans can be seen. Every day of the past week, about 4,000 pelicans have been observed in the precious reservoir, according to insiders, and we could not resist and reached the lookout, several times.

Vikar Reservoir, says Yaron Cherka, the main bird of the Jewish National Fund, was established in cooperation with the Hefer Valley Water Association and the JNF (which builds quite a few reservoirs throughout the valley). Vikar Reservoir, named after the Viker family from Canada who donated the money , is the largest reservoir and the side pumps are powerful sitting on the Alexander river and the role to draw water from the reservoir on the days of floods to the water will not flow into the sea.

on the western side of the reservoir is in the lookout big. and on the east side, is another vantage point, it is also preferred during the day and by noon it Because the pelican feeding station is close to it and also because instead, they, the pelicans, are closer to us, the spectators.

According to Cherka, about 50,000 pelicans pass through Israel every year, and in fact most of the world's population of common pelicans (one of three types of pelicans) passes through Israel from Europe on their way to Africa.

Occasionally, in isolated cases, you can also see a lone bird from the other two types of pelicans, the scalloped pelican and the little pelican, but it is very rare that you will be able to see them.

Also in December, you can see some pelicans that are "stuck" in the country (Photo: Photos by surfers, Danny Sadeh)

In recent years, hundreds of pelicans have been "stuck" here

How long do they stay here?

According to Cherka most of them leave towards the end of the month and continue to Africa after resting, eating enough and gaining strength to continue the journey.

In recent years, however, hundreds and sometimes

thousands of pelicans

have been "stuck" here

in December, and a war is beginning between them and the fishermen.

Because on the big migratory days the pelicans get huge amounts of food that comes from surpluses that stay with the illegal fishermen.

This is with the assistance of the Nature and Parks Authority.

When the migration season actually ends, there is no feeding of those that remain and they begin to frequent the fish ponds and cause damage to the fishermen.

How to get there?

The simplest way is to write either in Wise or in Google Maps "A valuable lookout point in the Mishmar Hasharon reservoir".

There's no way you'll get confused.

The road there is a dirt road that is passable for all types of vehicles.

But you should drive carefully if you do not want to cause damage.

It is also worthwhile to drive slowly, because along the route there are quite a few cyclists and pedestrians.

Behavior: There are quite a few people who come to the place with skimmers.

Since the place is not a nature reserve, there is no ban on operating a glider, as long as it is done according to the regulations of the Civil Aviation Authority.

But it's worth knowing: the glider's noise annoys pelicans as well as visitors who want to videotape and get a bee buzzing soundtrack.

Consider.

In addition, the pelicans must not be fed.

Your leftover food and waste should be taken with you.

So that other animals in the area do not dispose of the garbage.
